Jan. 24 called worst day of the year

British psychologist calculates ‘most depressing day’

Have you been feeling the weight of endless freezing days? Depressed at the fate of the Salahis? Maybe you're battling a profound case of Seasonal Affective Disorder? Well things are getting ready to take a turn for the better.

Yep, after Sunday everything will start to improve. That's because Sunday the 24th is the 'worst day of the year'.  Dr Cliff Arnall of the University of Cardiff, Wales, who specializes in seasonal disorders has created a model and determined that the 24th is the 'most depressing day of the year'! I'll let the professor explain:

While days technically get longer after Dec. 21, cyclonic weather systems take hold in January. Meanwhile, the majority of people break their healthy resolutions six to seven days into the new year, and even the hangers-on have fallen off the wagon, torn off the nicotine patches and eaten the fridge empty by the third week. Any residual dregs of holiday cheer and family fun have kicked the bucket by Jan. 24.

So what's a person to do? Beats me. What am I Dr Phil?

Sunday's run is Old Waterford Road which means a nice 12 miles from Rust Library to Waterford Elementary and back. If you want more than 12 miles then try running in place for a while. Hey .. what am I, your running coach?  Oops. Must be that SADS getting to me.

Where/When:

  • Sunday: Meet at Rust Library at 8:00 a.m.

Doing the 12 loop @ 7AM

Mike, I hope to join you guys for a 7 AM start at Rust.

Sat morning www.wunderground.com shows 10% chance of rain at 7AM, 100% chance of rain at 10AM, I'll have trail shoes on.

Greenberrys

Greenberrys is fine by me, I just saw the LCHS mentioned earlier and didn't want to show at the wrong place.  See you tomorrow at 7.

Sunday

I'll be busy celebrating National Pie Day on Sat, so I'm planning on a slow 12 with the club on Sun (assuming the rain is just a steady drip and not a downpour).

Sunday

I'm in for the 12 on Sunday, starting at 8 with the club.

We thought Greenberry's, but

We thought Greenberry's, but the high school is fine too, if you'd rather.  I hope you don't have a bad night!

Where Saturday morning?

Diane,

Barring a really bad night with our sick 15 month old I am in for tomorrow morning at 7 with you and Melissa.  Where do you want to start, the high school or Greenberry's?

16 on Sat.

Melissa and I are going to start at 7 and shoot for 16 miles.  Matt?...

Joining Heidi on Sat.

I'll meet you at the high school at 7:40ish.

Saturday

I can't make the run Sunday but I am up for starting a little earlier and doing 12-16 miles on Saturday if anyone wants to do that.

Hogan and Jones Doing the 12 loop

Leaving Rust at 7:00 and catching the back half of the club run.  Anyone else up for a nice run to remove the January SADS?

In for 12 on the Advice of Dr. Tom

Dr. Tom -- I can tell that some of my friends seem to get SADS during the winter, but all the short cold days don't really seem to bother me much. Is there something wrong with me? I just want to fit in. I'd like to go for a 12 mile run, but I'm afraid I might enjoy it and upset another runner. Should I sport a tattered nicotine patch to make it look like a struggle? Sign me . . . Dazed and Confused.

P.S. Does a Sunbox sad light really work?

sleeping in on the 24th...

... given it is the worst day of the year! Going a little longer on Saturday, though. Starting from the HS at 7:40-ish, meeting up with club run at Greenberry's, then back to HS after that. Should equal about 10 miles.
