July 10th Old Waterford - Random Statistics / Eating and Exercise / Choices

Two-thirds, more than 190 million Americans are overweight or obese
According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), obesity in adults has increased by 60% within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years. (Hmmm...any correlation with the rise of agri-business, farm subsidies, high fructose corn syrup etc? Corn farmers were paid $56 billion dollars over the last ten years by the federal government to grow their crop.)
The highly processed and refined products that pack our supermarket shelves are loaded with sugar, hydrogenated oils, and plenty more ingredients that we can't even pronounce i.e. not food.
One-third of Americans get 47 percent of their calories from junk food.
A quarter of the vegetables eaten in the U.S. are french fries.
The average adult shouldn't have more than 65 grams of fat or 2000 calories a day. One meal from Burger King, a hamburger and French fries, has 50 grams of fat and 2000 calories.
a sweet potato is a much better nutritional choice than a white potato. A medium white potato has about 220 calories. A medium sweet potato has 110, it has half the glycemic index, and it's rich in beta carotene.
We make a choice every day about what we eat and whether we exercise. You don't need to run Saturday morning , you could choose to stay home and have a large bowl of Fruit Loops and a soda (both made from corn), or you can come out and run Old Waterford Road, burn a lot of calories and then return home and drink beer. Beer is made from wheat and is therfore good for you. How many beers .. I mean calories can you burn running 12 - 18 miles?
Where/When:
Meet at Rust Library at 6 am

Have a great run, Diane!
Submitted by Casey on Sat, 2010-07-10 00:48.I hope you have a good run! I will be thinking of you and hopefully following your progress. The Kenyan repair crew arrived yesterday and seem to be making some improvements in the internet here in Malawi - so maybe I will be able to get a connection now and then. I hope you all are well:) Casey

Trail Run on Sunday?
Submitted by PatMiller on Fri, 2010-07-09 15:06.Anyone up for the standard 12 mile trail run from Keys Gap to the Blackburn Center and back starting at 7:00 on Sunday? you'll need to bring your own water and snacks. In order to properly support our economy, please be sure to include some items with corn syrup. For any rookies to this run, directions are: Take Rte. 7 West to Rte 9 West. Go through Hillsboro, continue on Rte 9 through the traffic light at Rte 671 (Harper's Ferry Rd.). Go about another 2 miles, just past Shady Lane, there will be a sign for the Appalachian Trail - Keys Gap parking area on your right.
Also, GOOD LUCK to Tom S. who is on his way to the Skyline 50K in Gore, WV this weekend! Should be a beautiful run!
Saturday and Sunday
Submitted by Karen on Fri, 2010-07-09 21:44.I plan to join you all at 6:00 on Saturday for a 12 miler. And, I am interested in doing some trail running on Sunday, but I would only have time for 6 miles that morning. Pat, I could go halfway to Blackburn Center with you and then turn back.... Karen
Keys Gap @ 7:00 on Sunday - B there or B [ ]
Submitted by PatMiller on Sat, 2010-07-10 16:12.Hey Karen and Brian and Cynthia - glad to hear you would like to join the fun! Karen, since this is an out-and-back course, you really could go as far or as long as you wish, you won't have any trouble following the trail back.
18 miles = 12 Newcastle Brown Ales
Submitted by Allison on Fri, 2010-07-09 14:33.More food trivia - humans get two-thirds of their calories from just four crops - wheat, corn, rice, and soybeans. Sounds like a pretty boring diet.
Phil, I'll join you at 6, then corntinue to do the long Waterford for a total of 18. If anyone plans to join me, I'll put out water and a corn-based sports drink at the elementary school.
How about '12 Miles = 18 Newcastle Brown Ales'
Submitted by T-bone on Fri, 2010-07-09 16:38.Allison & Phil - I have many dis-jointed thoughts; the few I'll share are:
-I'm not up for 18 miles, but 12 could work,
-my consumption list has wheat & hops near top,
-forget the 'corn-based sports drink': just leave newcastle @ end & we'll run faster,
-I intend to be there @ 6am, but don't wait...I'm planning to see how many newcastles I can consume before we run (starting NOW!).

Miscornceptions . . .
Submitted by Phil on Thu, 2010-07-08 13:54.It's amazing how cornfusing all this dietary stuff can be. If anyone is up for some cornvivial cornverstation, I think my choice for Saturday will be the 12 miles from Rust to Waterford Elementary and back starting at 6:00 a.m. After this pun-ishment, I can ignore the cornsequences of a bagel. The weather looks pretty sketchy, so I'll probably bring a hat.
